Origins of the Netherlands Carnival Festival
Originally, the Carnival of the Netherlands was a pagan holiday. However, during the earlier times, the Catholic Church added this event into their calendar as an additional festival that will lead up to Ash Wednesday. This is followed by Lent and the fasting period before Easter.
Earlier this festival was celebrated throughout the Netherlands. However, after World War II, Carnival in the Netherlands is usually celebrated in the North Brabant and Limburg which are basically Catholic provinces.

Witness the Prince of Carnival
The Prince of Carnival is a key attraction of the event as he will be the one who will get the keys to the city from the mayor for the next 3 days of the festival. The Prince usually roams around the city and tries to pump up the Carnival spirit.
Normally, the Prince of the Carnival is someone important in the city like a businessman or a person in power.
They can be easily recognizable as they normally wear tuxedos and a hat that features a rare bird feather.
Parades will be filled with Carnival Floats
Carnival floats are some of the biggest attractions of the parades. Each city has numerous clubs that create the floats and bring them to the parade. The members of the clubs often wear the same type of clothes to stand out from the rest of the crowd.

Live Music from Dutch Carnaval Brass Bands

The Grote Markt and the surrounding areas will be hosting the revelries of the Carnival. Breda gets renamed as Kielegat during the festival.

The Carnival festivities in Enschede usually stretch out from Parkweg till Molenstraat and Enschede gets renamed to Krekkelstad during the entire duration of the Carnival.
